David Bittner (b. 28 February 1951; d. 10 August 2026)–R.I.P.

Journalist and Waugh scholar David Bittner has died in Omaha. He was a prolific writer on Waugh’s works, and his articles appeared in Evelyn Waugh Studies as well as other academic and popular journals. Among his published essays are “On the Road to Morocco: The Hospital in Brideshead” (EWNS 28.1, Spring 1995) and “The Thread with the Built-in Twitch: The Case for Lady Marchmain,” (EWN 21.2, Autumn 1987) as well as “Evelyn Waugh and the Jews”, his 1989 M.A. thesis at Florida Atlantic University. David Bittner passed away on Aug. 10, 2026 in Omaha. Graveside services were conducted by Rabbi Benjamin Sharff.

He was preceded in death by parents, Max and Phyllis Bittner, grandparents, Sam and Elizabeth Freed, Eli and Chaja Bittner.

He is survived by his loving cousins and friends.

David was a journalist at the Palm Beach Jewish World and the Jewish Journal of South Florida, as well as an Evelyn Waugh Scholar.
