Lancing College, the school which Evelyn Waugh attended between 1917 and 1921, has announced that the 2013 Evelyn Waugh Lecture will be given on April 18th by Anthony Andrews, the actor who played Sebastian Flyte in the celebrated Granada Television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited
Mr. Granger shared his Brideshead reminiscences and some video clips with appreciative members of the Evelyn Waugh Society at the third Evelyn Waugh Conference held in the UK in August 2011.
On Feb. 21, on the BBC Radio 4 program In Our Time, David Bradshaw (Professor of English Literature at Worcester College, Oxford), John Bowen (Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of York) and Ann Pasternak Slater (Senior Research Fellow at St Anne’s College, Oxford and an honorary vice president of the Evelyn Waugh Society) joined Melvyn Bragg to discuss Evelyn Waugh’s comic novel Decline and Fall

The fourth (2012) annual Lancing College Evelyn Waugh Lecture was given on April 19th, 2012 by Reverend Professor Richard Griffiths, who discussed Waugh’s Lancing diaries and the lessons that can be learned from them in relation to his other written works. A transcript of the lecture is linked here.
Evelyn Waugh was a pupil at Lancing between 1917 and 1921.

The Anthony Powell Society is soliciting papers for its 7th Biennial Conference.
The subject of the conference is “Anthony Powell in the ’20s and ’30s.” The conference will be held at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England from 27 to 29 September 2013. For additional information email (click to email), or visit the conference page of the APS’s website.
The submission deadline is approaching for the 8th Annual (2012) Evelyn Waugh Undergraduate Essay Contest, sponsored by the Society’s journal Evelyn Waugh Studies and judged by its editorial board. The winning essay will receive a prize of $250 and will be published in a future issue of Evelyn Waugh Studies.
Undergraduates in any part of the world are eligible to enter. Submissions must be made by December 31st, 2012 and should not exceed 20 pages or 5,000 words.

The Evelyn Waugh Society is pleased to announce the winner of the seventh (2011) annual Evelyn Waugh Undergraduate Essay Contest. Congratulations to Robert Sherron, whose essay “Guy’s Qualitative Journey towards True Vocation in Sword of Honour” was judged to be the best of those submitted. Mr. Sherron is a junior undergraduate at the University of Dallas double majoring in English and Theology, with a concentration in Applied Physics.
On the winning submission, one judge commented, “[T]he best essay to me was ‘Guy’s Qualitative Journey towards True Vocation in Sword of Honour,’ by Robert Sherron. Much the most interesting, original and the best written.” Another stated “First rate: sober, accurate, perceptive, and in Catholic terms informative to me. Written with authority.”
Our thanks go to all who submitted an essay. One judge found the quality of the submissions as a whole to be the best he has seen in the time he’s been involved in the contest: “Just great.”
Mr. Sherron’s winning submission will be printed in the next issue of Evelyn Waugh Studies and also posted here.
